How to Protect Your Identity While On Vacation

There are many ways for you to become an unfortunate victim of identity theft or
fraud but luckily for you, there are also several ways to protect your identity from such threats - especially
while on vacation.
WHAT AND WHAT NOT TO BRING
If you don’t need to take so many important personal and financial documents with you then don’t. It’s so easy for
other people to steal property without a person being aware of it that you’re facing an incredible risk when you
bring such documents with you.
If you’re traveling, the only documents or cards that you should bring are your
passport and credit cards. Consider leaving all but one of your credit cards behind. At any rate, you can always
contact your lawyer and have him fax your personal information if it proves to be necessary.
WHAT NOT TO SAY It’s not a bad thing to strike up conversation
with fellow travelers – never mind that they’re strangers. What’s not a good thing is revealing too much
information about your life. Yes, it’s okay to view the world with rose-colored glasses…but don’t overdo it! You’ll
be amazed at the amount of information an ID thief can obtain about you just by knowing what state you’re from and
what traveling agency you used to help book your flight.
It’s better to be safe than sorry. Stick to the inconsequential things. Talk about
the weather or the other person’s life. Do not give your trust readily!
KEEP YOUR LUGGAGE CLOSE AND SAFE
Labeling luggage neatly and clearly is good; there’s no need however to write your complete address as well. If
you’re truly worried about your luggage getting lost or misplaced in an airport terminal, consult your travel agent
about travel insurance; most policies usually offer instant protection and services for such
circumstances.
And speaking of lost luggage, make sure that you keep them with you at all times.
Avoid asking a stranger to look after your bag even if you’re simply dying to go to the restroom and you don’t want
to lug around five huge bags while you struggle to get inside the toilet. It’s better to be uncomfortable now
than have your credit card hacked later . If it’s extremely necessary for you to leave your luggage attended, find
an airport staff member immediately and explain your dilemma. A compromise would no doubt be offered
immediately.
DON’T FLAUNT YOUR WEALTH UNNECESSARILY
Unless you’re accompanied by bodyguards and you’re traveling in a private jet, you are better off keeping a
low-profile while on vacation. Keep jewelry to a minimum as too much ice and bling-blings can attract unwanted
attention to yourself. Don’t dress richly or wear outfits that simply scream designer clothing and money; again,
it’s like waving red flags on bulls, only this time they’re intent on stealing your identity and money rather than
gorging you to pieces.
Make sure that you follow these tips inside and outside the airport. Always dress
appropriately. Wearing a cocktail dress while touring the Eiffel Tower, for instance, is not the way to go about
it!
BE ALERT AND ON GUARD ALL THE TIME Besides taking care not to leave
any of your belongings unattended, you should also take the proper precautions to prevent other people from cloning
or obtaining too much information from your credit cards or passports. Keep your eye at all times on the cashier
while he’s swiping your credit card. Never let any one stare too long on your signature. Be careful when using your
ATM; key in your PIN as fast as you can to prevent others from reasonably guessing what your password
is.
FINAL TIPS: WHAT TO DO BACK AT HOME Besides ensuring that you’re
safe from identity theft while on the road, you should also ascertain that no one can take advantage of the fact
that you’re not home as well. If you’re planning to travel for a long time, make sure that you inform your letter
carrier of your intentions and have them deliver your mail to someone you trust. If you have any deliveries
scheduled, cancel them as well.
Lastly, take care to lock all your windows and doors before leaving. If you’re in
the habit of keeping an extra key hidden somewhere outside, break that habit this once. Check your trash and see if
there are any important documents there that you’ve accidentally disposed which contain important personal
information about you.
Remember: protecting your identity while on vacation means using precautionary
measures to safeguard your interests both abroad and at home. Good luck!
