People have grown comfortable using such convenient items as credit cards,
checks, and online accounts. However, as they say, evil never sleeps. And crafty criminals and scammers
have manufactured new ways to steal and take – this time using your own identity.
Having your identity stolen can be a truly frustrating experience. The good thing is
that there is machinery to combat it. Make sure you follow the correct procedures to deal with this situation and
you can breathe a little easier knowing that your problem will be taken care of.
However, the shattered trust and the sense of vulnerability will definitely make
even seasoned credit card holders cower in fear. In an attempt to keep their items safe from abuse once again,
they will resort to extreme measures for safety.
Some may even opt to never apply for a credit card again. The stress and
inconvenience of dealing with the credit companies, the police and the credit bureaus may have taken their toll on
these people.
Oh the Pain Having your identity stolen can make anyone paranoid
about using any of the available online banking and credit card facilities on offer. There’s the initial
shock of learning that your credit card is stolen followed by the credit statements itemizing the various goodies
some thief has paid off with your account.
While you may have gone through the numbers and disputed what should be disputed, it
still remains that if things went wrong, you could end up spending months or even years clearing up the
mess.
This could cause a lot of stress and anxiety. If this is the case, then it would not
hurt to consult a counselor who may be able to help calm your anxiety. There are also support groups that
cater for this sort of problem. There is no better way to seek comfort in such times as from the company of
those that have fallen prey as well.
You may also need the help of credit advisors who will give you advice on how to
manage your accounts safely – and will help you set a plan to clear your debts if you have gained any
– remember NEVER EVER pay for debt someone else has run up in your name.
What to Do Here are some things you can do to help assuage the
stress you feel.
1. Seek support – counseling and support groups are a great way to cope with
the anxiety brought about by identity theft. Knowing that you are not alone gives you a better footing on how to
move forward again.
You can also learn of the stories behind these people’s predicaments. This will help
you learn how to deal with such incidents.
2. Get Informed – anxiety caused by identity theft may cause you to be suspicious
and tentative with regards to you day to day finances. To combat this, learn more about how these crimes are
perpetrated, and learn how you can avoid being hit yourself.
Such exercises will give you confidence in your dealings using your credit card or
any other account. You will no longer have to be a slave of your fears. Aside from that, you are also better
equipped to teach others how to care for their information.
3. Accept – you will have to accept the fact that what has happened has happened.
What you can do is take what good you can glean from such a terrible incident and move on with your life. You will
also have to leave justice in the hands of the law. If anyone is skilled enough to capture these criminals, then
it’s up to them. And if they do catch them, then well and good. But even before this happens, you will have to let
go and accept what has happened so that you may move forward.
4. Learn – stress can be a good teacher. With all that has happened you are now
ready to live again without making the same mistake twice. With this you can be free to live as before – albeit a
lot more careful.
Such stressful experiences are useless if you do not learn anything from them. So do
your best to be someone who is lesser of a target – one that these criminals should look out against.
